Common Problems We Fix

Marble with etching and dull spots

Etching & Dull Spots

Acidic spills and cleaners react with marble and turn glossy areas dull. We re-hone and polish to restore clarity.

Fine scratches and traffic wear on marble

Scratches & Traffic Wear

Grit acts like sandpaper and creates fine scratching. Honing refines the surface; polishing brings back the sheen.

Stains and darkened areas on marble

Stains & Darkening

Pigments and oils soak into pores. We deep clean, spot treat or poultice, then seal for better resistance.

Lippage with uneven marble tile edges

Lippage (Uneven Tiles)

High edges catch light and toes. We can flatten (hone) to reduce trip edges and shadow lines.

Chips and pits in marble surface

Chips & Pits

Impact and open pores create defects. We color-match stone-grade filler and level repairs flush.

Soap film and hard water buildup on marble

Hard Water & Soap Film

Mineral deposits and soap film cloud the surface. We remove buildup safely and reset the finish.

Our Simple, Thorough Process

1

Clean

Stone-safe deep clean removes soil, residues, and soap film so the surface is ready for repair and refinishing.

2

Repair

Color-matched filler levels chips and pits flush. Optional lippage correction reduces high edges and shadow lines.

3

Hone / Polish

We remove etches and fine scratches, then set your finish—matte, satin, or a brighter polish—for a uniform look.

4

Seal & Protect

Premium impregnating sealer for easier upkeep. We share care tips and a sensible maintenance schedule.

Video: Should You Crystallize Marble?

Crystallizing vs mechanical polishing—pros, cons, and what we recommend for homes.

Show transcript

Marble can look amazing after “crystallizing,” but should you do it? Crystallizing uses a fluorosilicate spray and a floor machine to create a thin, glassy layer at the surface. It shines fast, but that layer is brittle and needs frequent rebuffing.

Here are the trade-offs. Crystallizing is quick, low-mess, and can pop gloss in traffic lanes. The downsides are important for homeowners: it can develop orange-peel texture, trap soil, yellow with age, and make future honing and polishing more work. It also doesn’t stop etching from acids like lemon juice or vinegar.

When is it acceptable? Large commercial lobbies sometimes use it because they budget for frequent maintenance. For homes, we generally recommend a different path.

Our preferred method is mechanical restoration. We deep clean, remove etches and scratches by diamond honing, and then polish to your preferred finish—matte, satin, or a brighter polish. Finally, we apply an impregnating sealer to help resist stains and make routine care easier. That result is in the stone, not a film on top, so it looks more natural and is easier to maintain.

If your marble is dull or etched, you don’t have to replace it. With proper cleaning, honing, polishing, and sealing, we can restore clarity and protect the surface without the drawbacks of crystallizing.

Care Tips

  • Use walk-off mats to trap grit—grit is sandpaper.
  • Dust-mop or vacuum regularly; use soft pads, not abrasive scrubbers.
  • Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner; avoid vinegar, lemon, bleach, and harsh degreasers.
  • Wipe spills promptly—especially citrus, wine, coffee, and tomato sauce.
  • Use coasters and cutting boards; never cut directly on marble.
  • Add felt pads under furniture; lift heavy items—don’t drag.
  • Showers: squeegee after use to reduce soap film and mineral buildup.
  • Plan periodic inspections and reseal as needed for stain resistance.

FAQ

What’s the difference between etching and staining?

Etching is a dull, chalky mark caused by acids reacting with marble. Stains are color absorbed into pores. Etches need honing/polishing; stains need cleaning, spot treatment or poultice, then sealing.

Can you remove scratches and traffic wear?

Yes. We diamond-hone to remove fine scratches and restore a uniform finish, then polish to your preferred sheen.

Honed vs polished—what should I choose?

Honed (matte or satin) hides wear and is friendly for high-traffic areas. Polished has more reflection and pop, but shows wear sooner. We can demo both and recommend based on lighting and traffic.

How often should marble be sealed?

Most homes benefit from a check every 1–3 years. Frequency depends on traffic, cleaners used, and surface type (floors vs countertops). We’ll give you a sensible schedule after service.

Does sealer prevent etching?

No. Sealer helps resist stains, not acid etching. Good habits—pH-neutral cleaner, coasters, wiping spills—are still important.

Do you work on countertops and showers?

Yes. We repair etches and stains on tops, remove soap film and mineral buildup in showers, re-caulk change-of-plane joints, and seal for easier upkeep.

Ready to restore your marble?

Fast, friendly estimates. Most projects completed in 1–3 days.
